Description In 2023, Ecology sampled sediments in the Bainbridge Basin as part of the Urban Bays surveys under the Puget Sound Sediment Monitoring Program. Sediment chemistry, physical properties, and the composition of benthic invertebrate communities were evaluated and compared to results from previous surveys conducted in 1998, 2009, and 2015.
Key findings:
• Sediment and depth patterns show a clear gradient from sheltered, fine grained inlets to deeper, high energy passages with coarser sediments.
• Organic carbon, nitrogen, isotopes, and sulfides all show strong inlet to passage gradients, with highest nutrient and carbon levels in terminal inlets.
• Contaminant levels have improved over time, though legacy hotspots—especially in Sinclair Inlet—persist for metals like mercury.
• Benthic conditions have steadily declined since 1998, with the poorest communities in terminal inlets despite stable habitat and improving chemistry.
• Carbon, grain size, nitrogen, and metals explain about half of benthic patterns, but continued declines suggest additional unmeasured pressures.
