NPRR Ellensburg Roundhouse & Yard

Facility Site ID: 19856 Cleanup Site ID: 11869

Site Description

Records show that the Northern Pacific Railroad (NPRR) operated a "District Center" yard at the Site from about 1886 through around 1935.  After 1935, part of the roundhouse and the maintenance building were devoted to hay and agricultural supply, including storage of fertilizers and possibly insecticides.

In 1990 and 1994, during the closure and removal of underground storage tanks, heavy "black" oil not associated with tanks was found by Ward Rugh, Inc.  A site inspection of the tank removal in 1994 by Ecology employees noted that heavy black oil was entering the tank excavation adjacent to the City of Ellensburg W 8th Street (now University Way) right-of-way.

The full extent of oil contamination is not known at this time, and additional contaminants of concern are suspected at the Site.
