The site is located within the West 8th Avenue Right-of-Way (ROW), west of North Wenas Street, and South of University Avenue in Ellensburg, WA. The ROW is surrounded
by commercial land uses.
During the course of a cleanup of petroleum contaminated soil (PCS) at the Ward Rugh Site, a petroleum product not originally characterized was encountered. This product increased in concentration as the soil excavation proceeded into 700 block of what was at that time West Eighth Avenue (now University Way). An investigation conducted in 1991 showed heavy oil contamination.
An investigation was conducted on behalf of Ecology’s Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) in May 2021. This investigation included soil and groundwater sampling at five locations via direct push sampling methods. The locations were within and surrounding the former test pit location.
The investigation indicates that no contamination is present at the Site at concentrations above cleanup levels that would suggest the need for further investigation or cleanup.
In August 2021, Ecology issued a No Further Action determination for the Site.
