Planters Hotel

In the spring of 2015, two underground storage tanks (USTs) were removed from the Site.  At that time, the Site contained a commercial building that was used as a fast food restaurant.  The tanks were believed to have been used to store heating oil for a hotel that was demolished 45 years ago.  

Tank 1 was capable of storing 3800 gallons and contained about 600 gallons of heavy heating oil upon discovery.  The tank had several holes in the bottom and lower sides of the tank.  
 
Tank 2 was about 1100 gallons and had approximately 200 gallons of liquid, which appeared to be water with minimal concentrations of petroleum.  No obvious holes were found in the tank and no release was observed in the soil around this tank.
 
Three soil samples were collected from the bottom of each tank.  All samples returned from the Tank 2 location were below MTCA Method A cleanup levels.  The soil around Tank 1, however, was found to have diesel, heavy oil, total naphthalenes, and total cPAHs exceeding cleanup standards.
 
Groundwater was not encountered during tank excavation activities.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
