Cleanup Continuing Through Spring 2025

Adding to the treated soil stockpile to backfill the repository.
Adding to the treated soil stockpile to backfill the repository.

Final cleanup of soil contaminated with lead and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) began in spring 2024, and included:

  • May - October: Treating the lead-contaminated soil that classified as dangerous waste to keep the contamination from spreading as precipitation infiltrates it
  • November: Excavating a below-ground repository on the northwest part of the site and backfilling the repository with the treated soil and other contaminated soil requiring cleanup
  • December until complete: Place a protective cap over the repository so the contamination is covered
  • Spring 2025: File an environmental covenant on the property to document the remaining contamination and prevent it from being dug up or otherwise disturbed

Cleanup contractors have controlled and monitored dust levels during all earthwork. You can learn more in the Cleanup Action Plan and view more pictures on our Flickr album.

In 2019, interim cleanup addressed:

  • Three soil stockpiles that contained hazardous concentrations of lead and PAHs
  • A small area of lead contamination

Soil was excavated from the lead‐contaminated area, stockpiles were removed, and the materials were taken off‐site to appropriate disposal facilities. You can learn more in the Interim Action Report.

Site History

The Central Valley School District (CVSD) purchased this property from the Spokane Gun Club.

In October 2018, Ecology visited the property to do an Initial Investigation to decide whether to add it to the Contaminated Sites List (CSL). That same month, CVSD's consultant completed an Environmental Site Assessment, as they are planning to build school facilities on the property.

Because contamination remained on parcels next to the interim cleanup area, we sent CVSD an Early Notice Letter in February 2019, informing them we added the property to the CSL because further cleanup was required.

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site is in our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
