Meeker Gas Station
Site Background
The Site is generally located at 105 Washington Avenue North in Kent, Washington (Property), at the southeast corner of the Meeker Square shopping center.
A grocery store occupied the Property from 1928 to 1960. Chevron purchased the Property and operated a gasoline service station from 1960 to 1983. The former service station included two dispenser island canopies, a station building, and underground storage tanks (USTs) that contained gasoline and waste oil.
The station building was demolished, and USTs were removed in 1983. The Property was then used for parking. A Rite Aid store was built in 2007 and occupies the Property since then.
Chemical Of Concerns
Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination at the Site was initially discovered in 1991 but was not reported to Ecology until April 2002. The timing of the release occurrence is unknown but is likely associated with the former service station.
Petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil and ground water is still present on the southeastern portion of the Property and has extended off-Property to the south and east.
Cleanup Conducted At The Site
In April 2002, an excavation was conducted to approximately 7 to 8 feet below ground surface (bgs) in area of the former gasoline USTs. A total of approximately 342 tons of contaminated soil was removed. Additional excavation to the south was limited by the utility corridor along the southern Property boundary.
Oxygen Release Compounds (ORC) was placed at the bottom of the excavation to enhance the degradation of the residual petroleum hydrocarbons.
Shallow ground water is present at depths at approximately 7 to 10 feet bgs. Ground water generally flows to the east-southeast. Currently, three monitoring wells (OW1 through OW3) are present at the Site.
Next Steps
Voluntary Cleanup Program
This site is in our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.
Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
