Ecology is working on a plan to clean up the site. The draft cleanup action plan will be available for public comment before Ecology finalizes it.

Draft reports describing contamination at the site (remedial investigation) and comparing cleanup options (feasibility study) will also be available for public comment before Ecology finalizes them.

This site is a formal cleanup site under Washington’s cleanup law, the Model Toxics Control Act. Ecology supervises cleanup work and holds public comment periods throughout the cleanup process.

In Washington, polluters and/or property owners conduct and pay for cleanup. Ecology
identified four potentially liable persons (PLPs) that are responsible for investigating and cleaning up the site:

• Occidental Chemical Corporation
• General Metals of Tacoma
• SRS Properties
• Don Oline

In 2007, Ecology and these four parties entered a legal agreement, Agreed Order No. DE 1679, which requires the cleanup parties to investigate contamination at the site, compare cleanup options, and suggest a cleanup option to Ecology.

1913 Marine View Drive is a 6-acre cleanup site in the Tacoma Tideflats, near the Hylebos Waterway. Because of hazardous materials at the site, Ecology is requiring cleanup to protect human health and the environment.

Between 1970 and 1973, Occidental Chemical Corporation disposed lime sludge at this site. Lime sludge is a byproduct of producing solvents. It can contain contaminants like chlorinated organic compounds and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs).

Around the same time, General Metals of Tacoma also disposed auto fluff at this site. Auto fluff is waste left over from shredding old cars for scrap metal. It often contains PCBs and heavy metals.

In addition to lime sludge and auto fluff, other potentially hazardous fill materials were also placed on the site.

Don Oline owned the site during the 1970s, when it became contaminated. SRS Properties currently owns the site.
