Site Background

UCO Corporation, a backpacking and mountaineering equipment company, operated at the property from 1977 to 2012.  Equipment was manufactured from extruded aluminum. Improper disposal of used cutting oil and compressor oil as well as aluminum shavings is the source of the release.  Currently, the Property is occupied by RC painting, which uses the building for storage and office space.

In December 2013 a total of 14.87 tons of oil range total petroleum hydrocarbons, carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aluminum contaminated soil were removed from the site.  Soil samples collected from the excavated area showed not all the contaminated soil was removed.  Additional excavation of 2,400 pounds of contaminated soil was removed in February 2015.  Soil samples collected from the excavation confirmed all contaminated soil had been removed.  Groundwater sampling was conducted.  Soil and groundwater concentrations are below state cleanup standards.

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
