The Groat Brothers Inc. site is located at 608 and 618 West Scott Avenue in Woodland. Groat Brothers, Inc. (GBI) leases the property from Woodridge LLC. Since 1978, GBI has been running a heavy hauling and trucking company on the site.

In 2002, investigations found petroleum hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater. Spills during fueling from storage tanks caused the pollution.

Cleanup

In 2002, GBI removed all the petroleum contaminated soil from the site. Some contamination remained in groundwater. From 2002 to 2010, GBI monitored groundwater every 18 months.

In 2004, GBI recorded an environmental covenant for the site. The covenant prohibits activities that could release any contaminants remaining on the site. Groundwater from the site may not be taken from the property for any use.

Periodic Review

When contamination remains at a site, Ecology reviews the cleanup about every five years to make sure it still protects human health and the environment. Ecology completed the first periodic review of this site in 2015. During that review, we determined that the cleanup continued to protect the health of people and the environment.

The environmental covenant for this site was terminated in 2017. Therefore, periodic reviews are no longer required.

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
