Ecology invites you to review and comment on the proposal to remove this site from the Hazardous Sites list  June 10 – July 10, 2021 using the online comment form.

The Washington State Department of Ecology proposes removing the Sea Alaska Industrial Electric site, located at 415 Maple Avenue, Snohomish, Washington, from its Hazardous Sites List.

We are asking for your comments on the proposed removal of the site from the Hazardous Sites List. You are invited to review the Draft Sea Alaska Industrial Electric No Further Action Letter, which describes why Ecology believes cleanup is complete.

This site was cleaned up under the Voluntary Cleanup Program at Washington State Department of Ecology. The Voluntary Cleanup Program enables owners of contaminated sites to meet state cleanup standards independently and to receive technical guidance from Ecology during the process.

The Voluntary Cleanup Program enables owners to work on a contractual basis rather than under an Ecology legal order. Participants in the Voluntary Cleanup Program pay fees to Ecology to cover the department’s costs for guidance and review. Voluntary Cleanup Program sites must meet the same cleanup standards as properties formally managed by Ecology under the state’s cleanup law, the Model Toxics Control Act, created by a 1989 voter initiative.

Ecology was investigating an adjacent property and noticed a wet, oily area at the back of the Sea-Alaska property along the east fence. The business had dumped waste liquids and used the cement pad for pressure washing electrical parts, causing cadmium, lead, and heavy oil contamination. The contamination was removed in 2007. After that removal, soil tests under the parking lot showed lead contamination above state standards. However, since the asphalt parking lot prevents exposure to contaminated soil, we are ready to remove the site from the Hazardous Sites List. An environmental covenant will be placed on the property, requiring maintenance of the parking lot
