Tiger Oil 16th St & E Nob Hill

Facility Site ID: 528 Cleanup Site ID: 4937

Site Description

The Tiger Oil 16th St and E Nob Hill Boulevard Site is located at 1606 East Nob Hill Boulevard, Yakima. The site operated as both a retail gas station and a bulk fuel facility where petroleum products were stored underground and then pumped to tanker trucks for delivery to other sites. In 1980, a release of approximately 11,000 gallons of fuel from product delivery lines was reported, though Ecology estimates that as many as 23,000 gallons may have been released. This release reportedly contaminated at least nine drinking water wells and resulted in a temporary closure of the Yakima Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) until the flow of gasoline into the sewer system was stopped.

In 1993, the site was added to Ecology’s Hazardous Sites List with a ranking of “1”. Sites on the Hazardous Sites List are a priority for Ecology, and have completed a Site Hazard Assessment (SHA). A SHA provides information about the environmental risk of the site. Risk is based on the amount of contaminants, how toxic they are, and how easily they can come in contact with people and the environment. Sites are ranked relative to each other on a scale of “1” to “5”; with a rank of “5” being the lowest.

What Was Done

In 2005, twelve underground storage tanks (USTs) were removed from the property and underground fuel lines were drained and capped with cement. Site assessment activities during UST removal indicated that gasoline and diesel range petroleum hydrocarbons in concentrations exceeding Ecology’s cleanup levels were found in soils contained in the excavation pit.

In April 2014, additional environmental assessment was conducted at the site. Soil samples were collected from test pits and soil borings. In August 2014, groundwater monitoring wells were installed and groundwater samples were collected.

Cleanup Complete

Based upon cleanup activities, Ecology has determined the site is no longer a threat to human health and the environment. Ecology made a no further action and the site was removed from the Hazardous Sites List in March 2016.
