Description The former Asarco smelter in Ruston and north Tacoma released air emissions that carried arsenic, lead and other heavy metals. These metals settled on the surface soil over 1,000 square mile area of King, Pierce and Thurston counties, called the Tacoma Smelter Plume. The Washington Department of Ecology is addressing soil contamination on child play areas, residential yards and providing technical assistance to developers working in the plume.

Many construction sites in the Puget Sound region may have arsenic and lead soil contamination. This FAQ explains what to do to protect workers and people living around work sites to prevent exposure to contaminated dust and soil.
