Description The Department of Ecology collects vertical profiles of pH along with key oceanographic variables monthly. Ecology’s pH data provide a unique historical record to (1) address seasonal and spatial patterns in Puget Sound and Washington’s coastal bays and (2) establish baseline pH conditions for marine waters. As of 2014, the dataset had not been assessed or reviewed in context of historical data, calibration records, and related variables for quality assurance. Due to increasing importance of ocean acidification and potential value of the dataset, a rigorous assessment was conducted on measurements from 1989 to 2013. Ecology’s pH record now serves as a unique asset for assessing changes in pH conditions due to its geographic extent throughout Puget Sound and the coastal estuaries, its temporal resolution, and historical perspective.
