Description To reduce lead exposure, the Washington State Legislature adopted a new law in 2024 addressing cookware that contains lead. In 2025, this law was changed to focus on types of cookware that are the most likely to expose people to lead. Beginning January 1, 2026, it will be illegal in Washington to manufacture, distribute, or sell cookware or cookware components containing lead at more than ninety parts per million. As of Jan. 1, 2028, the restriction will be no more than ten ppm. This focus sheet explains the new law, what it means for manufacturers and sellers, and how to find more information.
