Remedial Investigation Work Plan

Georgia-Pacific (GP) has submitted a draft Remedial Investigation Work Plan required under Agreed Order 18201. It defines the investigation of environmental contamination at this site, including:

• A historical site review.
• Identification of gaps in data that need to be addressed.
• A sampling and analysis plan, that includes a quality assurance project plan.

Next steps

After we finalize the work plan, GP will begin the investigation and write a report on what it finds. We will make the report available for public review and comment.

Pulp and paper mill

Located at 401 NE Adams Street in Camas, pulp and paper operations have taken place on the site since the late 1880s. While the mill has shut down pulping operations, it still makes paper products from purchased pulp. We are not aware of any plans for the sale or shutdown of current operations at the site.

Due to historic land use and industrial practices, soil is contaminated with total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) from diesel, gasoline, and oil.

Other likely contaminants in soil, groundwater, and/or sediments include:

• Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carcinogenic PAHs.
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX).
• Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
• Metals (lead and chromium).
• Dioxins and furans.

Camas Business Center

Also owned by GP and included in this cleanup is a parcel north of the main mill site, at 906 NW Drake Street in Camas, called the Camas Business Center (CBC). GP historically used this site for manufacturing of chemicals for the paper making process. Soil and groundwater contamination includes halogenated organics and metals. Soil contamination also included PCBs.
