Sportland Mini Mart
Site Description
The Site has been a retail service station since about 1980. At this time, underground storage tanks (USTs) were installed and, according to the owner, had been used prior to their installation at this site. Both leaded and unleaded gasoline has been sold at this station.
In fall 1998, two UST systems were decommissioned and removed. The dispenser island and piping were also removed. Petroleum impacted soil was discovered beneath the dispenser; the release likely occurred from a dispenser fitting. Groundwater was observed in the excavation. Soil sampling found petroleum contamination above MTCA Method A cleanup levels.
After a Site Hazard Assessment conducted in 2012, the Site was ranked a “3” on the Hazardous Sites List. The Hazardous Sites List is a statewide list of contaminated properties. Sites can be ranked from a “1” to “5”. A rank of “1” is the highest level of environmental concern compared to other sites on the List, and a rank of “5” is the lowest.
Cleanup Activities
After the USTs were removed, the tank excavation was backfilled with clean stockpiled overburden material and about 48 cubic yards of shallower impacted soil were removed from the dispenser area. The report states that gasoline-range petroleum hydrocarbons remain at depth in soil beneath the dispenser island and within the suspected groundwater fluctuation zone.
A second excavation was dug for the installation of new USTs. Soil samples were collected from the base of this excavation, along with one groundwater sample. Sample results indicated gasoline and BTEX at levels above MTCA Method A cleanup levels in soil. No lead was detected in either sample. BTEX and TPH-G were also found above cleanup levels in the groundwater sample.
In October 1998, free product was measured in monitoring wells at the Site. Between November 3 and December 3, 1998, approximately 300 gallons of free product and dissolved phase hydrocarbons in water were pumped into a recovery tank.
In August 1999, groundwater was evaluated in four onsite wells. Results showed petroleum contamination remained at the Site. In 2013, quarterly groundwater monitoring began at the Site.
Voluntary Cleanup Program
This site is in our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.
Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
