Independent Metals Storage Lot

Facility Site ID: 21489 Cleanup Site ID: 12299

Cleanup Activities

In early 2012, Seattle Public Utilities found PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls), in stormwater runoff from the site and in sediment collected from an associated storm drain. A petroleum sheen was also visible on storm water flowing from the site. Ecology regulates contamination from both PCBs and petroleum because they can harm human and environmental health.

The source of the PCBs and petroleum sheen was an open container that caught and leaked rainwater. To correct the problem, Independent Metals covered their containers to prevent stormwater flowing through them and built a berm to reduce stormwater flowing offsite.

In 2018 and 2020, Independent Metals tested soil and groundwater and found that mitigation was successful and the site was in compliance with states cleanup standards. The site was removed from Washington's Hazardous Sites List in 2020.

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
