Site Background

The Site is a commercial property.  The former Gibson Auto Body facility operated from 1974-2005.  This site also was used as a automotive repair service, automobile dismantling as well as a junk yard. Currently, there are vacant buildings on property.

Investigations showed that the soil contamination was within 2 feet of the surface.  Groundwater was not encountered during soil drilling down to 18 feet below the ground surface.  The soil consists of a consolidated, low permeability glacial till.  The shallow soil contamination, low permeability glacial deposits, and depth of the water table (at least 16 feet) indicate that groundwater was not impacted by contamination from the facility.

The contaminated soils were excavated and taken to a permitted facility. Soil samples within 2 feet from the surface were taken to confirm soil cleanup meetings state cleanup standards. Also, all junk vehicles, containers, fuel tanks, drums, and solid wastes were removed from the property. 

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
