Beginning in the 1950s, the property was used as an automobile salvage yard. Operations left stockpiles of old tires, scrap vehicles, and automotive parts.

In 2004, Ecology did a site hazard assessment and listed the property on the state’s Hazardous Sites List. After this, Terry’s Salvage closed. In 2011, the City of Kelso removed an abandoned building and scrap car parts from the site.

Cleanup

In fall 2013, the city removed debris and 3,100 tons of contaminated soil. They then refilled the site with clean soil. Ecology awarded the city $755,300 in grants to help it plan for and clean up the site.

From January 9 - February 10, 2014, Ecology held a public comment period on removing the site from the Hazardous Sites List. You can learn more in the notice we mailed to the community and read the comments and our responses.
