The Calhoun’s Service Station site is at 4540 Pacific Avenue South in Tacoma, currently the location of Sinaloa Tires. For several decades, automotive service stations have operated on this property. During that time, gasoline and waste oil leaked into soil and groundwater on the site. These fuels and their breakdown products, such as benzene and toluene, can be carcinogenic and harm human health and the environment.

Contaminated soil was removed in 1991, but tests in 2011 showed that some contamination was still on site.

To clean up the site, we:
  • Studied the site thoroughly to find all contamination.
  • Ensured that people would not be exposed to contamination through groundwater or soil vapors.
  • Removed 244 tons of petroleum-contaminated soil.
  • Tested the soil and groundwater until results showed safe levels for four quarters in a row.
Ecology now considers the cleanup complete. In 2016, the site was removed from the Contaminated Sites List.  

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
