Site Background

The Lacey Food Mart has operated as a gas station and convenience store for several decades. After a check valve in the fuel distribution system failed, contamination was found in the soil and groundwater on the site.
 
The property owners worked with Ecology under the Voluntary Cleanup Program to remove the contaminated soil and treat and monitor the groundwater. Cleanup activities included:
  • Defining the extent and nature of contamination
  • Establishing a groundwater monitoring system
  • Disposing of over 2,200 tons of contaminated soil off-site
  • Injecting oxygen into contaminated soil to stimulate petroleum breakdown.
Several soil and groundwater tests showed that the cleanup was successful. Ecology has determined that no further action is necessary.  

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
