Columbia Park Marina
Site Description
In 2010, the Site was added to Ecology’s Hazardous Sites List with a ranking of “2”. Sites on the Hazardous Sites List are a priority for Ecology, and have completed a Site Hazard Assessment (SHA). A SHA provides information about the environmental risk of the site. Risk is based on the amount of contaminants, how toxic they are, and how easily they can come in contact with people and the environment. Sites are ranked relative to each other on a scale of “1” to “5”; with a rank of “5” being the lowest.
What Was Done
Two 1,000 gallon leaded gasoline Underground Storage Tanks (USTs) were removed from the Columbia Park Marina in April 1994. The USTs stored gasoline from the late 1960s until the late 1980s, when they were decommissioned and replaced with new above ground storage tanks. Soil and groundwater samples collected were contaminated with petroleum products, including gasoline and its volatile components. Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), and the fuel additive lead were found. After the USTs were removed, contaminated soil was excavated and groundwater was aerated and pumped from the tank basin.
In February 2014, additional soil samples were collected and wells to monitor groundwater were installed. Testing of soil samples, and four quarters of groundwater samples, showed that the petroleum contamination was either no longer present or below state cleanup standards.
Cleanup Complete
Ecology has determined the site is no longer a threat to human health and the environment. Ecology made a no further action determination in December 2016. The site has been removed from the Hazardous Sites List.
Voluntary Cleanup Program
This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.
Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
