Wenatchee City Worthen St Landfill
Facility Site ID:
343
Cleanup Site ID:
4085
Site Description
The site is located in the City of Wenatchee (City). It covers an area of around ~20 acres along about a half mile of Columbia River shoreline. Currently, the area is primarily capped by a section of Riverfront Park and the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).
The site was used as a refuse dump off and on from ~1930 to 1958 or 1972 (there is conflicting information about when landfill was closed). The landfill municipal solid waste (MSW) appears to extend from near 5th Street to the north to near East Orondo Avenue to the south. The extent of the MSW has not been fully characterized, so it possible MSW may exist on other properties next to the site. Depth to groundwater is about 10-30 feet below ground surface.
In 1989, the site received a No Further Action (NFA) determination based on a 1985 Potential Hazardous Waste Site Preliminary Assessment Summary Memorandum. The 1985 memorandum states that the site is a former municipal landfill and there is no record of hazardous wastes being accepted at this site. The memorandum did recommend occasional inspection or monitoring of groundwater for potential leachate generation and migration.
In 2016, Ecology “re-opened” the site and rescinded the No Further Action determination because additional contamination was found during the redevelopment of the adjacent Wenatchee City Public Works site.

Past Remedial Actions
Since 1972, there have been several remedial actions, including removal of MSW from the site, mostly related to construction and expansion of the City’s WWTP. In 1972, a significant expansion occurred which required a large amount of MSW to be removed and disposed of at the Malaga Landfill located to the south. It was reported that MSW was removed in 1975 during construction at the WWTP. Other WWTP expansions occurred in the 1990s, 2004, and in 2012 that required more MSW be removed and disposed of at the Greater Wenatchee Regional Landfill in East Wenatchee.
In December 2014, 689 tons of MSW were transported and disposed at the Greater Wenatchee Regional Landfill as part of a remedial action at the Wenatchee City Public Works site that involved re-grading and capping of soil contamination related to that site.

Remedial Investigations And Environmental Contamination
Sampling data for the site is in several reports that focused on cleanup and redevelopment of the Wenatchee City Public Works site. These reports document soil and groundwater contamination above MTCA cleanup levels. Hazardous substances above cleanup levels include petroleum, pesticides, (PCBs), dioxin/furans, and a number of metals. Data was not collected for cPAHs, aldrin, dieldrin, or thallium.
