Site Description

In 1991, a tanker fire burned 10,000 gallons of gasoline on State Hwy 2 near Monitor, Washington. An unknown amount of fuel was released.

Cleanup Activities

An emergency cleanup was performed and petroleum contaminated soil was removed to the extent possible; however, excavation of contaminated soil could not be completed along the roadway due to danger of undermining the highway.

Later, water and gasoline in the excavation area were pumped out and properly disposed of off-site.

In 2018, soil sampling revealed no gasoline contamination remained above state cleanup standards. Groundwater sampling conducted between 1996 and 2018 confirmed no contamination remains above state cleanup standards.

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.
