Facility Site ID: 33641566 Cleanup Site ID: 1055

BMW Seattle is on Capitol Hill in Seattle, King County. The buildings were constructed in the early 1900s to house auto part sales and manufacturing. Though the buildings were constructed independently, their current arrangement is one building with partitions between the sales and service areas.

Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination as diesel and motor oil (TPH-Dx), petroleum hydrocarbon contamination as diesel (TPH-D), lead, and cadmium were all detected above MTCA Method A cleanup levels in soils at the Site.

The petroleum contaminated soil leaching to groundwater pathway was evaluated using Ecology’s Interim Guidance. This evaluation indicated that the type and concentration of TPH present at the Site did not pose a threat to groundwater. Lead and cadmium concentrations exceeded the criteria for human direct contact and protection of groundwater. However, site conditions mitigate both risks.

Environmental Covenant Removal

During the 1999 cleanup process, Ecology required that an environmental covenant be recorded for a portion of the Property that contained total petroleum hydrocarbons (diesel), lead, and cadmium contaminated soil located beneath an original on-site building. In early 2015, after the original building was demolished, excavation and removal of all remaining contaminated soil was conducted and completed. Since there is no remaining contamination on or beneath the Property, the environmental covenant recorded in 1998 was removed.

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
