Cleanup Complete

In October 2023, Ecology issued a no further action letter for the site. Public comment to remove the site from the Hazardous Sites List was completed March 1, 2024.

Site Description

The site operates as a gas station and convenience stop. In 1991, during a site assessment  four test pits were excavated. Soil sampling showed that gasoline, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were above Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) cleanup levels for soil. Groundwater sampling of water that seeped into the test pits showed that gasoline, diesel, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes were above MTCA cleanup levels for groundwater.

The Site is currently on Ecology’s Hazardous Sites List with a ranking of “3”. Sites on the Hazardous Sites List are a priority for Ecology, and have completed a Site Hazard Assessment (SHA). A SHA provides information about the environmental risk of the site. Risk is based on the amount of contaminants, how toxic they are, and how easily they can come in contact with people and the environment. Sites are ranked relative to each other on a scale of “1” to “5”; with a rank of “5” being the lowest.

What's Been Done

Site investigations began in 1991 where petroleum contamination was identified in soil and groundwater. Interim action in 1998 excavated and removed “obviously stained or odiferous soil”. Additional site assessment in January 2016 detected soil and groundwater contamination above MTCA cleanup levels in monitoring well MW-2.

Five additional wells were drilled in May 2016, for a total of eight monitoring wells. Contamination was not detected in soil or water samples taken during the May subsurface investigation; this includes samples from MW-2. Subsurface investigation in March 2017 detected diesel in groundwater samples. Further investigation in September 2017 detected additional soil contamination above MTCA cleanup levels.

Additional wells were drilled in 2017, 2018, and 2020 yielding a total of 13 monitoring wells.

In 2020, another boring yielded a soil and groundwater samples above MTCA cleanup levels. Groundwater samples have not exceeded site cleanup levels since April 2020.

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
