Site Description

The Chevron Station 98944 site is the location of a former gasoline station. The service station was torn down in February 1976, and the property was vacant until a Subway Restaurant was built.

In July 1994, a Phase I and II Assessment was conducted to determine the potential environmental impacts that may have occurred at the site. Soil and groundwater analysis showed several locations in which sample results exceeded the Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) Method A cleanup level for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons as Gasoline (TPH-G) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX).

The site is currently on Ecology’s Hazardous Sites List with a ranking of “3”. Sites on the Hazardous Sites List are a priority for Ecology, and have completed a Site Hazard Assessment (SHA). A SHA provides information about the environmental risk of the site. Risk is based on the amount of contaminants, how toxic they are, and how easily they can come in contact with people and the environment. Sites are ranked relative to each other on a scale of “1” to “5”; with a rank of “5” being the lowest.

Cleanup Activities

Based on the results of the July 1994 Phase I and II Assessment, three monitoring wells were installed on site to assess the extent of groundwater and soil contamination. Sample results reported groundwater contamination above cleanup levels in all three wells.

In August 1996, Geoprobe soil borings were drilled both on and offsite. Soil samples indicated that BTEX and TPH-G were below MTCA Method A cleanup levels. Groundwater sample results confirmed groundwater contamination above MTCA Method A cleanup levels in the groundwater samples from both the Geoprobe soil boring locations and the existing monitoring wells.

In April 2006, Ecology issued an opinion letter regarding the need for additional groundwater monitoring at the site. Groundwater was sampled and evaluated in 2007, 2008, 2009. and 2011.

In April 2018, Ecology and Chevron U.S.A. entered into an Agreed Order for the completion of a Remedial Investigation, Feasibility Study, and draft Cleanup Action Plan at the site.
