Wymans Marina & Wholesale Supply

Facility Site ID: 2821735 Cleanup Site ID: 2097

A Puget Sound Initiative site - Reaching the goal of a healthy, sustainable Puget Sound

Background

Prior to the late 1940s, the Wyman’s Marina and Wholesale Supply Site and surrounding area were used for lumber milling and shipbuilding operations. As lumber demand declined, and rebuilding fire-ridden mills became too costly, the property was sold to Raymond and Kathleen Robinson who operated Robinson’s Marina, an 80-berth marina with fueling, dry dock, and maintenance and storage facilities. Robinson’s Marina provided boat maintenance and engineer repair services until 1965 when the property was sold to the Port of Anacortes. The Port leased the property to Don and Rayetta Wyman to continue boat repair and fueling services.
Wyman’s Marina operated until 1998, when boat maintenance operations and all underground storage tanks associated with marine fueling were decommissioned and removed. In 2011, the Port replaced the boat ramp located west of the former Wyman’s building.

Status

In 2003, Ecology notified the Port of Anacortes, the Site owner and Potentially Liable Person (PLP) that Wyman’s Marina was being added to their list of Sites known to be contaminated by hazardous substances. The decision was based on the results of prior investigations, which found the Site contains contaminated materials in the soil, including:
  • Gasoline-, diesel-, and heavy oil-range petroleum hydrocarbons
  • Metals including arsenic, cadium, copper, lead and mercury
  • Pesticides (4,4 DDD)

The Port volunteered to clean up the Site under Ecology’s Voluntary Cleanup Program. Contaminated materials and in-water and upland structures were removed. Over 400 tons of contaminated soil were removed from 1998 to 2014. Samples collected after the removal of these materials structures found contaminant levels to be below the required minimum.

From October 2013 through January 2014, a habitat mitigation project was completed to provide soil and habitat for juvenile salmon. Approximately 7,600 square feet of overwater structures were removed in the process. Approximately 17,800 square feet of intertidal habitat and 8,500 square feet of riparian/salt marsh habitat were created.

Voluntary Cleanup Program

This site was cleaned up under our Voluntary Cleanup Program, which provides technical help to owners of contaminated sites.

Voluntary Cleanup Program customers pay fees to cover our costs for technical help and reviewing cleanup reports. Sites in this program must meet the same cleanup standards as the sites Ecology manages under legal orders.
