Environmental Sampling in March
Consultants will be working with South Park Marina staff in March to move boats and equipment so that monitoring wells can be installed and samples can be taken from soil, stormwater, and groundwater throughout the property. The most noticeable event will be the drilling of the wells.
This sampling is happening as a part of the investigation of contamination at South Park Marina. Ecology, the Port of Seattle, City of Seattle, and South Park Marina have signed a legal agreement, called an agreed order, that requires the Port, City, and Marina to investigate the conditions and delineate the extent of contamination at the property.
The schedule looks like this:
* March 1 - 12: Well drilling and soil sampling
* All of March: Stormwater sampling
* March 22 - April 9: Groundwater sampling
The estimate overall project timeline looks like this:
- Agreed Order In Effect: April 2019
- Remedial Investigation Work Plan completed: February 2021
- Remedial Investigation underway: March 2021
Site Background
The South Park Marina is located at 8604 (and other addresses) Dallas Avenue South in South Park area of Seattle. It is located on the west bank of the Lower Duwamish, immediately upstream from the South Park Bridge. The actual property is approximately two acres but size of the cleanup site is not yet known.
In the 1950s through the1960’s A & B Barrel used the site to clean and recondition barrels. The waste materials such as contaminated water was discharged to a small pond on the property, and then into the Duwamish River.
From the 1960s to the present day, the site was or is used to park cars, store and repair boats and conduct other activities associated with an active marina. All of these on site actions may have contributed to the contamination. Activities conducted on the adjoining Terminal 117, Malarkey Asphalt site are also potential sources of contamination.
