Facility Site ID:
345
Cleanup Site ID:

Site Description
The site is located at 1329 W Woodin Avenue in Chelan, across the street from the Lake Chelan shoreline. The site operated as a petroleum bulk plant from 1927 to 1989. It is currently a parking lot for the Lady of the Lake ferry.
Petroleum contamination was discovered in both soil and groundwater in 1989 and the bulk plant was permanently closed in September of that year.
The site is currently on Ecology’s Hazardous Sites List with a ranking of “1”. Sites on the Hazardous Sites List are a priority for Ecology, and have completed a Site Hazard Assessment (SHA). A SHA provides information about the environmental risk of the site. Risk is based on the amount of contaminants, how toxic they are, and how easily they can come in contact with people and the environment. Sites are ranked relative to each other on a scale of “1” to “5”; with a rank of “5” being the lowest.

Cleanup Activities
In 1992, five 20,000-gallon above ground storage tanks (ASTs) (three gasoline, one diesel, and on heating oil), one 12,000-gallon gasoline AST, one 280-gallon underground storage tank (UST), the office building, warehouse, truck loading rack, truck unloaders, a barrel storage area, and pumps and piping were removed from the site.
In 2001 and 2005, contaminated soil was excavated. In 2001, air sparging and soil vapor extraction took place. Additional air sparging occurred in 2005. Groundwater sampling was conducted between 1989 and 2015. No contaminants were detected in any of the monitoring well samples at concentrations exceeding cleanup levels since 2014.
Ecology issued a no further action letter in March 2019. The site was removed from the Hazardous Sites List in April 2023.
