Current Status

Ecology held a public comment period from August 19-September 17, 2018, inviting the public to comment on the proposed removal of the site from the Hazardous Sites List.  Ecology responded to the comments and removed the site from the Hazardous Sites List in 2019.

Periodic reviews are not required for this site as there are no institutional controls required.

Site Description

The 205 Group (owners) and Vancouver Oil Company, Inc. (operators) used the site as a service station. In 1987, they found gasoline product in a sanitary sewer line and in groundwater.  In 1991, they confirmed that piping connected to the L&C Deli facility had leaked. The contaminants of concern included total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX).

Cleanup Site History

Cleanup work at the site occurred in 1987, 1992, 2011, and 2012, and included:

  • Removal of 524 gallons of gasoline product by a recovery system.
  • Removal of underground storage tanks, associated piping, and fuel dispensers.
  • Removal of 1,420 tons of contaminated soil.
  • Treatment of groundwater with bacteria and an activated carbon product to promote the biological breakdown of the remaining contaminants.

Soil borings were sampled and monitoring wells were installed to make sure contamination was below cleanup levels. Soil and groundwater samples from 2012 showed that cleanup was successful and met the requirements of MTCA Method A standards. Ecology determined that no further action was necessary.
