The 49-acre Boomsnub/Airco Site is located in a light industrial and residential area of Vancouver, Washington. The Site includes a former chrome-plating facility and the currently operating BOC Gases plant.
The site is a Superfund cleanup site. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is the lead agency conducting the cleanup.
The site has environmental covenants in place to restrict land use. Covenants are an institutional control to protect the cleanup actions and prevent exposure of people and the environment to contamination.
Periodic reviews are required when institutional controls are required at a site. EPA conducts periodic reviews of this site to make sure the controls remain effective and the cleanup protects human health and the environment. EPA conducts periodic reviews about every five years.
Site use restrictions called institutional controls are in effect
Institutional controls can be fences, signs, or restrictions on how the property is used. For instance, an institutional control may prohibit installing drinking water wells or disturbing a protective cap that isolates contamination. These restrictions keep the contamination contained and keep people from being exposed to the contamination. The controls are usually listed in environmental covenants recorded with the county.
Periodic reviews are required when institutional controls are required at a site. Ecology conducts reviews to make sure the controls remain effective and the cleanup still protects human health and the environment. We conduct periodic reviews about every five years.
