The Solid Wood Inc. site is about 16.4 acres in size and historically operated as a lumber mill. The site lies on the West Bay of Budd Inlet, east of West Bay Drive and north of the Fourth Avenue Bridge. The Solid Wood Inc. site includes the former mill area, former railroad right-of-way, and peninsula.

Past operations at the site contaminated of soil, groundwater, and possibly sediment. Initial investigations found total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and metals at levels that exceed the Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) cleanup standards for soil or groundwater.

The site was purchased by the City of Olympia in 2006 for development as a waterfront park. The city is now responsible for the cleanup of contamination at the site.

The city conducted an interim cleanup action during construction of West Bay Park in 2009. The park opened in July 2010. A remedial investigation to determine the full extent of contamination is underway.
